John Meko is one of The Philly POPS' co-op students, and has been with the POPS for 6 years! John is currently pursuing a M.M. in Jazz Performance at Temple University. John comes from a family of trumpeters — starting with his grandfather, his father, and now himself. At Temple, John studies under POPS Artistic Director for Jazz Terell Stafford.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Six years ago, John Meko heard about an internship opportunity with the POPS, and the rest is history! John began his musical journey as a student at LaSalle High School, where he learned to play trumpet. He continued pursuing his passion for music with a bachelor's degree at Temple University. Today, John is studying his M.M. in Jazz Performance at Temple while still working as a co-op at the POPS!
John made his debut with the POPS at PARX Casino for Big Band Broadway with Ashley Brown in June 2019! He later performed in the Kimmel Center Lobby for the pre-concert entertainment before POPS Goes to Hollywood. Finally, he finished 2019 performing in The Philly POPS Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia's Holiday Celebration under the direction of his teacher and mentor, POPS Artistic Director for Jazz Terell Stafford!
LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Having started while in high school, John's position at the POPS was his first job. Since then, he's worked with every department at the POPS — helping with sales, production, marketing, education, development, and more! While with the POPS, he's learned plenty of skills that help him both in the office, and as a working musician.
A LIFELONG LOVE OF MUSIC
John is currently working with Artistic Director for Jazz Terell Stafford to create a virtual All-City jazz experience for students this year, including virtual masterclasses. After graduation, John plans to work as a perfoming musician in the Philadelphia area — using the experience and connections he gained while working at the POPS!
